“We then headed south by crowded public bus to Mamallapuram which, in ancient times, was apparently a major port but now resembles a fishing village that has given itself over to tourists. The main attractions here are the unusual rock temples and rock carvings some of which stand on the beach and survived the tsunami.
These are worth a visit followed by a stroll along the beach, but the rest of the place is overrun with tourists and the resulting shops and cafes.
Although it was a change from the city, it did not seem very ‘Indian’ and we moved on the next day.
