We liked what we saw of Croatia’s coast and islands and also enjoyed Zagreb. Food and accommodation was all of a good standard although not cheap. Restaurant food prices were on a par with UK prices. We very much
enjoyed the cafe culture and sampled some excellent glasses of iced coffee along the way. We enjoyed our fair share of ‘latte’ equivalents too. Mind you these appeared on the menu in various disguises and sometimes we had to insist on our large mugs or cups actually being filled to the top!
Smoking is still very prevalent here so if you don’t smoke, as we don’t, you may find on occasion the atmosphere not to your liking. The only thing we didn’t like was the widespread graffiti particularly in Split, Zadar and Zagreb. We also found lots of it in the centre of Budapest too.
One thing that surprised us was the number of upmarket and designer shops around, especially clothes shops and there were many shoe and handbag shops. Wages are not as high as in the UK but we got the distinct impression that fashion and style seem to be very important to people in the towns and resorts. (I suspect it may be different in the rural areas).
One final observation was the number of extremely slim young women and extremely tall people (mainly men) that we saw. It was really quite noticeable.
All in all it was a most enjoyable trip and somewhere we would visit again. There are still lots more islands to visit as well as many interesting and beautiful areas inland.
