Monday 19 May. Today has been a travelling day. Our original bus was cancelled but we were able to take an alternative which gave us an added bonus of having 2 hours in Zadar. It is a busy bustling place without a tourist influence. The maze of narrow streets in the old town and the many coffee bars gave it quite a buzz. Like Split, it was scarred by graffiti but to a lesser degree. Why is this being done?
Our second bus took us onto Pag Island which is scenically very different. It is really barren rocks. The lower levels are full of salt pans which is a main industry of the island along with the Pag’s sheep’s cheese. Our bus journey turned out to be quite a noisy affair as the bus departure seemed to coincide with the end of lessons at the local college. Teenagers the world over seem to be much the same, noisy, a bit loud and boisterous.
On arrival in Novalja we found that very few of the rooms to rent were actually available as we are still a bit early in the season. In the end we opted to stay at Vila Palcic, a 3 star hotel. Our room is very nice. We have just had one of the best meals of our trip so far at Steffani’s restaurant. I got to try the local cheese speciality too. I definitely feel as though I have eaten too much! All this to get to the island of Rab from here on the one daily ferry at 6am!
